ldfw3: toms & made in leeds artist, joe gambleBack
At the Student Lock-in at Trinity Leeds on Monday night, Made in Leeds selected some great local artists to customise TOMS canvas originals with great individual designs in front of the queues to get into the Office store.
One of the artists was Joe Gamble, an illustrator whose work we’ve featured in The City Talking newspaper. He provided the graphics for our interviews with Leeds and Bradford football legends Ces Podd and David Wetherall.
Joe has also done a lot of artwork for Leeds United fanzine The Square Ball, including a squad poster for the first issue of this season that gave the 1987/88 team a 2013/14 update, that inspired his designs for the TOMS shoes.
“My design on the shoes was partly inspired by the team photo I did in The Square Ball,” said Joe, “And also when I was going through my room the other day trying to sort stuff out, I found loads of Action Men in my cupboard. I quite liked how there were all these weird faces in my cupboard, and I wanted to do a pattern on the shoes. I’m most comfortable drawing faces – I draw them quite a lot. From the start of my third year my tutors said I needed to draw more faces, and I’ve drawn more faces ever since.” •
You can see more of Joe’s work at his website www.joegamble.co.uk.
