leeds united confirm benedicic loan, turn down becchioBack
Leeds United have confirmed the signing of Zan Benedicic on loan from Milan for the season, with an option to buy.
Approaches for the Slovenian under-21 international were turned down earlier in the summer by Filippo Inzaghi, who took Benedicic on Milan’s pre-season tour to America; Benedicic soon flew back as his place down Milan’s pecking order made first team opportunities look limited.
Zan will face a fight for a place at Elland Road, too; described as an attacking midfielder and aged just eighteen, he joins Alex Mowatt, Chris Dawson and Lewis Cook, along with senior players Luke Murphy, Rudy Austin, Michael Tonge and David Norris, plus new signing Tommaso Bianchi, all battling for midfield starting spots in the diamond formation Leeds have been using in pre-season.
Benedicic played thirty times for Milan’s under-19 side last year, but has yet to play a senior professional game. YouTube does offer clips of two goals at youth level, into the top corner against Chievo, and from the edge of the box for Slovenia against the Czech Republic under-21s.
Leeds are being strongly linked with 22 year old Juventus centre-half Frederic Sorensen, while Simon Austin tweeted that Massimo Cellino has turned down the chance to sign a potential replacement for last season’s top scorer Ross McCormack – United’s tenth highest all-time goalscorer, Luciano Becchio, currently exiled in East Anglia.
