The City Talking
Every year in Leeds we print The City Talking A-Z issue, and every year it’s about more than just a list of what’s going to be good in 2016. It’s about exploring, on a personal level, what people in Leeds are thinking and feeling and getting excited about in their city; not a date-by-date list of events, but a person-by-person exploration of excitement.
It’s something that grows every year, as we find more people to ask, and more people who want to answer. With each edition, it becomes more expansive, more reflective and more immersive, uncovering more of the city than we’d seen or known before.
I’m looking forward to Leeds becoming even more powerful and inspiring as a city. There are loads of challenges chucked at Leeds, both historically and geographically, but it’s such a progressive, inspiring, focused city. I think there’s going to be a lot of cooperation and collaboration happening in 2016. There’s a lot of mayhem in the world, but at a local level people can use that to work as communities and be more cooperative with each other; I think that’s what’s happening in Leeds.
We’re renovating and upgrading our recording studio and we’re going to let people use it. We’ve accumulated lots of equipment over the years and we’re going to build on our collection for people to use. So many great records have been made in this room. We’re not here as much on weekends, so it doesn’t make sense leaving it empty. Our friend James will be the engineer; he’s going to bring the best of his studio in here, and we’ll be leaving the best of our studio in here. Our own writing will happen next door, and we’ll book out our own time in here to finish and mix. We’re calling it Utah Central; it’s going to be a really great space and we’re really looking forward to it.
